Rayonism - Rayism - Rayonnism - Rayonist art

Rayonism is an abstract art movement that originated in Russia in the early 20th century, around 1911. It was founded by Russian artists Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova and is characterized by its unique approach to abstraction. In rayonist paintings, objects are depicted as if seen through a prism or shattered glass, with multiple rays of light emanating from them. This technique creates a dynamic and fragmented appearance, emphasizing the play of light and color.

Rayonism was influenced by the Futurist movement and sought to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life. It is considered one of the earliest abstract art movements, predating movements like Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. While rayonism did not have a long-lasting impact on the art world, it was an important precursor to the development of abstract art in the 20th century.
